ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a report which is based on the third of four conferences on the applications of microcomputers in development sponsored by the US Agency for International Development and the US National Academy of Sciences in collaboration with a host country. The joint sponsor for this third meeting is the National Board for Scientific and Technological Research. The role of the National Board for Scientific and Technological Research is to plan, coordinate, and promote scientific and technological research in Portugal. Additional financial support has been provided by the Luso-American Development Foundation. The focus of the third meeting described in the report is on emerging technologies. The advanced hardware concepts that will soon be realized will allow increasingly complex systems to be used with microcomputers. The combined advances in hardware and software represent a tremendous opportunity for developing countries to move forward more quickly, to embrace a field in its entirety and transform it to match their needs.
