ABSTRACT

Computer vision techniques augment the human visual analysis of images or photographs. The applications of computer vision are not restricted to manufacturing processes or inspection techniques. In fact, these applications are recent compared to remote sensing and medical applications. Various applications of image processing can be categorized under the following major areas: document processing, industrial automation, remote sensing, medicine and biology, nondestructive testing, personal identification, scientific applications, and agriculture applications. Computer vision converts images or pictures from a camera into usable data through the use of digital computers. A typical image processing application consists of three fundamental operations: the acquisition of images; the processing and quantitative assessment of features in an image; and the formulation of decisions based on this information. Applications of computer vision methodology require a critical mass of hardware, software, and personnel. It is an interdisciplinary activity that requires close interaction among computer scientists, engineers, and experts in the application area.
