ABSTRACT
In June of 1981, the Ministry of University Affairs in Thailand appointed a committee to undertake an English-Thai machine translation project. The English-Thai MT model consists of three main phases: analysis, transfer, and generation. It has been designed to provide language independence in both the analysis and generation phases; language dependence is restricted to the transfer phase only. A short sentence can serve as an example of English to Thai translation: "The reaction has an interesting application." In the structural transfer stage, all ambiguities that result from lexical transfer are resolved, and transformations are incorporated into structures for which there is no direct equivalent in the target language. The Thai language generation phase of the project is still underway, Thai language generation follows a top-down design and involves two stages: multilevel generation and morphological generation. Many aspects of and types of sentences have not been covered for English and Thai.
