ABSTRACT

Computers are an active medium for establishing communication with students. When used correctly, computers can greatly improve the teaching process. The educational software developed thus far is generally poor in quality. Artificial intelligence techniques must be used to produce educational software. The goal is to increase the knowledge and performance of the learner in regard to a particular aspect of the world. The programs are also unable to identify the causes of students' errors, which is a crucial point. Some programs have some planning capabilities in that they are sensitive to students' answers. An expert system is a system designed to perform specific tasks that were formerly performed by a small number of human experts. It is important to stress that this expertise is acquired through experience, not by teaching. This explains why there are so few experts. Microcomputer implementations are possible in applications of the intelligent drill-and-practice type.
