ABSTRACT

The multinomial logit model can be used to assess the effects of independent variables on a multicategory dependent variable. The model has been applied to analyze choice of occupation and choice of mode of transportation. It is used by several authors in this volume to identify determinants of contraceptive method choice. In applying the multinomial logit model to contraceptive method choice, it is necessary to examine carefully some assumptions of the model. The assumption of mutual exclusiveness and exhaustiveness of the choices does not pose a serious problem. For couples who may use more than one method concurrently, a choice has to be made about which method should be chosen as the one used. The usual presentation of the multinomial logit results includes a table of coefficients, with each choice being compared with a single reference category.
