ABSTRACT
The book was shaped by ten years of IFAD's experience concerning innovative approaches to people's participation in development - specifically, the participation of the rural poor. Its aim is to present a concise, critical assessment of the participatory approach: how it works, what its benefits are and what snares or pitfalls it harbours for the unwary.
