ABSTRACT

International trade in forest products has grown considerably as a subject of interest to the nation’s forestry community. Forest economics research applicable to international trade in forest and related products is only a broadening of the agenda appropriate to forest resource economics research. Experience has demonstrated that a separate program of economic research on the international trade aspects of forestry is both feasible and necessary. A number of reports and reviews of forest economics and related research have directed attention to international trade in forest products. Changes in technologies for manufacturing forest products and the relationship of such changes to economic productivity and trade have been subject of forest economics research. International trade in forest products has prompted some to identify emerging international trade issues in need of forest economics research. The evaluation of international trade flows and market trends has rested largely on partial equilibrium analysis.
