ABSTRACT

The building of the Roseiris dam marked the beginning of Damazin town. Laborers who came to work on the dam were given different tasks and responsibilities. A well-staffed hospital was built which made up for the lack of health services in the nearby villages. Four or five contractors were responsible for the initial migration into the town. Each company had its own work to perform. Syed Abdel Syed Company and Hamid Humeida were responsible for constructing the buildings in the township. The town of Damazin and its surroundings were the pasture lands of the Rafa'a al Hoi and other nomadic groups. The subsistence farmer of the villages around the two towns earns from his farm and juruf lands, makes and sells coal, and at times works at odd jobs in the town. The markets of Damazin and Roseiris look deceptively similar to the untutored eye.
