ABSTRACT

The imitation of the capitalist way of management of enterprises and market mechanism in the economic reform and the criticism of Marxism inevitably shook the position of Marxism in the eyes of the people. The Chinese Communist leaders have been cautious about the influx of capitalist influence. Two basic principles have been followed by the Chinese Communists on ideological matters: abandon outdated theories and restrictions so as to meet the needs of the reform; and find a basis from Marxism so as to rationalize all the reform measures. The reformists have been confronted with two problems in the reform. One is the divorce of theory from practice. Many of the measures adopted violate the Marxist principles to which the Chinese Communists adhered. One characteristic of Mainland China’s development policy is that it is in line with many of the concepts and measures advanced by Liu Shao-ch’i.
