ABSTRACT

Doctoral dissertations and masters'theses form a special class of library research material, and catalogs of dissertations and theses both American and foreign, assume importance in university, reference, or special libraries. While some dissertations are issued by commercial publishers, and some may be privately printed, most are available only in typewritten form or on microfilm. Most dissertations are submitted in manuscript and are available, on interlibrary loan or for purchase, either on microfilm or in Xerox print. Style manuals are used to answer questions about grammar, usage, and correct form for footnotes and entries in bibliographies. The manuals listed here contain formats which are often required by publications in anthropology and related fields. Lists bibliographies of theses and dissertations produced through 1984; entries are arranged by broad subject area and indexed by name, title, and institution.
