ABSTRACT

Guides to archives and manuscript collections are another important source frequently ignored by students. Guides to archives and manuscript collections can help to identify research material appropriate to one's project. Because archives are not always accessible or available to the general public, it is frequently necessary to make an appointment before considering a research visit. Local restrictions regarding the photoreproducing of materials, and the use of computers, pens, and cameras, should be investigated in advance. National Anthropological Archives include 40,000 documents collected by the Bureau of American Ethnology between 1879 and 1965 in three divisions: an alphabetical file on the Indians of North America north of Mexico; a smaller geographical file on peoples of Mexico, Central America, and non-North American areas; and a numerical file indicating the subject under which cards have been filed in the two other divisions. Subject approach is by tribe, linguistic group, or name of individual.
