ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the selected features of the mass based political cultures evident within the emergent political systems on the basis of survey materials gathered in Hungary, Poland, and the Czech and Slovak republics. It provides the fact that the survey material collected from citizens varies somewhat among the four countries. In order to measure citizens' sense of local political competence, another statement was used, and respondents were again asked to indicate to what extent they agreed or disagreed with the statement. Citizens in Hungary in particular show a strong propensity to agree with the statement, a clear majority in each of the residential locations expressing total agreement. Kuty is a municipality located in the southwest lowlands, near the border dividing the Czech and Slovak republics. The municipality has long historical roots, and became an important railroad crossroad after construction of the railroad between Prague and Bratislava in the 19th century.
