ABSTRACT

In December 1981 a Dublin-based teacher, Christopher Fettes, founded the Ecology Party of Ireland. The Green Alliance has a very decentralised organisational structure. As the title suggests it consists of an alliance of various green groups located throughout the country, but particularly in the Dublin area. Green Alliance representatives readily agree that some changes would be necessary were the organisation to become larger. In the 1987 election the Green Alliance produced a party program summarising much of their policies, only a sketch of which can be given. The Irish case, so far, is one of a green party without a support base. In sum, the prospects for the Green Alliance do not look good in terms of vote percentages. There are, however, indications that environmental issues are receiving greater attention by Irish politicians and in that sense at least something of a "Green" message is being promoted.
