ABSTRACT

Mikhail Gorbachev’s visit to Beijing brought a host of foreign reporters who became eyewitnesses to the massive demonstrations for freedom and democracy and against the overall corruption of government officials. Following Gorbachev’s departure from Beijing, on May 17, General Secretary Zhao Ziyang and Premier Li Peng separately visited the students on the square. The Beijing massacre was the beginning of the end of any remaining legitimacy of the Chinese communist regime. The elite leadership of a dozen or more ruling families and their adherents have lost all support of the Chinese urban society, and that includes communist urban society. The new emphasis on communist Chinese naval development ought to be watched. The Chinese communists have exhausted the ideas and ideals they applied after the seizure of power in 1949. The time has come for a fundamental return to the ongoing policies of the free world. In the People’s Republic of China the crisis of communism has arrived.
