ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the issue of intellectual property rights (IPR) from the perspective of the individual firm. It attempts to examine some of the issues by drawing upon the viewpoints and experiences of individuals who are involved in the technology marketplace -- either as direct participants or as intermediaries to the transactions. The chapter discusses three areas -- technology intelligence, technology valuation and international business support services which were identified as potentially valuable to firms in making strategic decisions with regard to their international operations. However, as small firms become more international in their operations, and as competition from other countries increases, the need for such support services will become essential. The degree and nature of competition also influence firms in their technology dealings. In some industries, foreign competition is more serious and recognition of this is reflected in stronger lobbying efforts and pressures on governments to increase IPR protection.
