ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some preliminary information on the sexual behaviors and belief systems of Latino migrant female sex workers who operate out of popular drinking establishments, commonly referred to as cantinas. It suggests that ways in which the information may be used to help create culturally appropriate educational human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) risk reduction programs for them. A sizable number of Latino migrant women work in the sex industry in Southern California and in doing so may put themselves at risk for HIV infection. While the exact number is unknown, those familiar with the situation believe that many migrant women are involved. Latino female sex workers in southern California carry out their underground activities in many different circumstances and locations and with different motivations. Few data are available on the behaviors of Latino migrant female sex workers in California, and almost none are available on those migrant women who operate out of cantinas.
