ABSTRACT

My interest in using stories to plan cross-curricular lessons came after I attended a workshop for all lower-primary English facilitators in the region. The purpose of the workshop was to develop the use of stories in our classrooms. It gave an example of how one can plan a cross-curricular lesson. We discussed and shared ideas with other facilitators on why stories are important to younger learners. We concluded that stories

encourage learners to read

make learners fluent in the language

encourage learners to make their own stories

help learners put ideas in order

increase understanding and vocabulary

encourage turn-taking in communication

give learners confidence and self-esteem

help learners understand other subjects better

provide fun and enjoyment
