ABSTRACT

Mr. Uehara's story begins in the summer of 1971. While at work on July 26th, Mr, Uehara began to have stomach pains. Not wanting to leave work on account of a stomach ache, Mr. Uehara rested at work and then had a friend follow him home to be sure he got home safely. At home he went on with life as usual, drinking his usual two decanters of "sake" and going to sleep. 1 He never told his wife of his stomach pains, and her only clue to things being not quite normal was his insistence that the "sake" tasted like water. In the morning his stomach still hurt so he decided to stop by the neighborhood clinic on the way to work. Without checking either his pulse or blood pressure, the doctor gave Mr. Uehara some pain killers and an injection. Mr. Uehara lost consciousness.
