ABSTRACT
We first meet Maria as a second-year law student. Her parents are relatively privileged in Soviet society: her father is a noted journalist and her mother is professor of law at the republic's law faculty. She had no particular health problems during her childhood and adolescence. She had received the usual immunizations at the local polyclinic and had occasional encounters with the health care system for minor childhood ailments.
