ABSTRACT

This article is based on an interview with George and Trudy Huebner by Sharon Woodcock. Mrs. Woodcock lived in China from December 1976 until February 1981. As a Foreign Service Nurse for the United States Department of State, she went to China in 1976 to open the medical office at the United States Liaison Office in Beijing. She worked in that role until August 1978. In April 1978 she married the United States Ambassador to the Liaison Office, Leonard Woodcock. Following the negotiations and agreements that allowed for full diplomatic relations between the United States and the People's Republic of China, Ambassador Woodcock was named the first American Ambassador to the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, China. Mrs. Woodcock remained in China with her husband and, although no longer responsible for the medical unit, she maintained close personal friendships with medical colleagues in China.
