ABSTRACT

I've been pretty healthy. Although I had the usual children's diseases and had a couple of operations (kidney stones and Achilles tendons) in 1972, for most of my adult life I have been in pretty good health. Moreover, since I have played tennis two or three times a week for more than two decades, I got used to having some minor aches and pains. Sometimes I might work with a physiotherapist on muscle and joint problems, but I always assumed I could play through the pain. Thus, I was taken aback when, early in the 1980s, I started to experience a pain to the right of my groin (it seemed to be radiating into my scrotum). It kept getting worse, making it difficult to walk. I didn't mind pain, but this was interfering with my tennis. I decided to consult with my doctor.
