ABSTRACT

The excavations at La Ciudad exposed both cremation and inhumation burials. As is usual in pre-Classic sites, the vast majority of these burials were cremations of both primary and secondary types, with the latter predominating over the former. Physical anthropologists assisted in and directed the excavation of the burials to ensure the collection of necessary osteological measurements and data. Dating of burials has been conservative and period designations were assigned to only 80 cases. The phase designations were derived primarily from the grave goods included with the burial. Secondary cremations dominated the burials with 223 examples or 97% of the cremation sample and 88% of the total burial sample. The burial sample from La Ciudad was, in most ways, typical for Colonial and Sedentary occupations. The sample did lack some specialized characteristics found only at larger Hohokam sites, such as Snaketown and the Grewe site.
