ABSTRACT

It is well known that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has been one of the fastest growing regions of the world in recent times. GDP growth rates varied between 6 and 8 percent on average over the 1960-80 period in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand, although 1980s' growth has been somewhat less spectacular, especially in the Philippines. With the likely continuation of above world average growth rates over the next decade, patterns of food consumption will continue to change in ways similar to those observed in Japan and the newly industrialized economies in Northeast Asia.
