ABSTRACT

The Workshop on the Selection of Health and Family Planning Components for Community-Based Distribution (CBD) Projects marshalled the expertise of field planners, donors and the scientific community to discuss the advantages and problems associated with the community-based implementation of important primary health and family planning interventions. In designing integrated CBD projects, or in enlarging the scope of existing ones, it is important to consider potential constraints to the combined service approach. Training for CBD fieldworkers must be based on a clear understanding of the goals and technical activities of the program, and take into account existing worker proficiencies. Supervisory models can very widely. The Sudan Community-Based Health and Family Planning Project provide supervisory training for the Health Assistants based in rural dispensaries. Most projects operate in areas with inadequate census and vital statistics, resulting in a lack of baseline information.
