ABSTRACT

United States government claims of extensive Cuban involvement and a potentially threatening situation for American citizens in Grenada were supported by the capture of large caches of weapons and People's Revolutionary Government (PRG) documents. A rift developed in the New Jewel Movement (NJM), Grenada's ruling party, when a dispute broke out between Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and his deputy, Bernard Coard. General Hudson Austin, Commander of Grenada's military forces, subsequently announced the formation of a Revolutionary Military Council headed by himself. The United States was not the only nation concerned about the upheaval in Grenada. Neighboring island states met on Friday, October 21st, under the auspices of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), to discuss their concerns. The capture of the Calivigny complex marked the end of significant military activity and enemy resistance on Grenada. Official reports and evaluations continue to dissect URGENT FURY, but some of the issues are likely to remain for some time to come.
