ABSTRACT

The Community Annual Storage Energy System, CASES, is a thermal utility that provides efficient and economical heating and cooling services to a community. Heat is collected in summer and returned in winter to reduce fuel consumption. Winter's cold is retained and used to eliminate conventional air conditioning. The cost and performance characteristic of CASES have been evaluated via hourly simulation studies. As much as 80% of the energy required for heating and cooling of buildings can be obtained "energy free" with lower cost heating and cooling than is common today.
