ABSTRACT
Comfort conditioning for residential and commercial buildings accounts for approximately 15% of total U.S. enduse consumption. Space heating, in particular, has become a technological olympiad in which the competition is fierce among fossil-fuel fired forced-air furnaces, electric furnaces, and radiant electric heating. New entrants to the competition include heat pumps and, most recently, solar heating units.
