ABSTRACT

In 1963, I am a beginning climber at Devil's Lake, Wisconsin, and experienced climbers tell engrossing stories around the campfires. The name John Gill is attached to tales of a person able to do one-arm pull-ups while pinching the 2 x 4's of a basement ceiling. Gill seems to possess more of the qualities of heroic myth than of flesh and blood. Yet, climbs at Devil's Lake are there to prove the myths: Gill's Corner, Gill's Crack, Sometime Crack, the Flatiron ....
