ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates the policy impacts of community action research in a project in support of the farm labor movement in California and the United Farm Workers of America (UFW). Relationships among the parties involved with the project are discussed. In July-August 1984, applied research was conducted among California farmworkers, with the primary purpose of documenting how much farmworkers themselves consider the farm labor movement as a viable alternative for improving their living and working conditions. It is important to note that endorsement of the UFW is as strong among those farmworkers who are not affiliated with the union as among UFW members. The survey of California farmworkers shows that they overwhelmingly endorse the United Farm Workers, and believe that the UFW offers the best alternative for improving their lives. For example, 91% believe that the UFW is good for farmworkers, and 83% think that the UFW's efforts and activities have improved the lives of farmworkers.
