ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book presents the case studies to show how anthropologists have made important contributions to policy and to the advancement of knowledge about problems of individuals and communities in diverse cultures. It examines the processes through which anthropology does assist the work of those involved in making policy—the decision makers, as well as citizens and special interest groups. The book emphasizes that at every stage in the policy process we should be aware that to become involved in social policy is to participate in issues of moral and political values. It describes the process of incorporating knowledge in the policy development process as one which includes articulation and understanding of a problem, formulation and implementation of policy, conduct of evaluation studies, and the provision of feedback for policy reformulation.
