ABSTRACT

The Nordic region is divided among nations reasonably equal in size and power. The Nordic situation is rather similar to that of the Balkan countries, where both the Romanians and the Yugoslavs have had border conflicts with the Russians and the Italians. Even if the Nordic countries have managed to limit the role of the big powers, the area has been increasingly affected by crossing Russian, German, and Anglo-American strategic interests. The British wanted to complete the naval blockade of Germany by mining the territorial waters of Norway in the North Sea. On the German side, the navy had long advocated an attempt to seize Norway as a means of waging a more effective submarine war against the British. Denmark emerged from the war without the prestige of gallant Norway; however, it was comparatively undamaged from sabotage by resistance groups or from German exploitation or repression.
