ABSTRACT

This chapter explains to test the hypothesis that the perceived relationship between moral goodness and development is a function of society's modernization stage as well as the respondents' own evaluation of their societal modernization. The word suggests that new norms or standards already exist and, therefore, modernization means learning to accept or being made to accept preexisting norms or standards. The second battery of questions testing for the respondent's evaluation of the modernization process under way in Peru is the semantic differential, which measures attitudes. The instrument employed in the field test in Peru had been prepared with a view toward its use in different national environments. In the case of Peru, an additional clement entered the picture. Peru is an unusual society in that it includes several cultures. Peruvians perceive that their country is becoming modern, urban, ambitious, and rich.
