ABSTRACT

This chapter argue that the study of certain knowledge-use structures may shed an interesting light on basic issues in the theory of modernization itself. It focuses on the professional and policy areas that rely on social and behavioral science knowledge so that we may provide support for the plausibility of the assertion that a detailed comparative investigation of the matters might shed light on a more fundamental understanding of modernization trends. In the process of modernization, which includes, of course, the process of expanding the knowledge system, the professions almost inevitably become specialized linkages between the knowledge systems in general and the moral structure of society. The chapter suggests that the interplays between the dynamics of the knowledge system of a society and the moral order on the one hand and the knowledge system and the technology based development processes on the other hand are especially important areas of investigation.
