ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with the subject of intra-German relations, discusses that the situation reached in the two parts of Germany and focuses on the prospects for the future. The large number of journeys by West Germans and West Berliners to East Berlin and to the German Democratic Republic (GDR) remained at the same high level. The restrictions on working facilities for Western journalists in the GDR and the expulsion of another television correspondent are seen by the federal government as a serious setback to its endeavors to achieve correct and good-neighborly intrastate relations with the GDR. All other East European governments place more confidence in the loyalty of their citizens and display more understanding for their natural desire to travel. Everyone in Europe and throughout the world is aware of the fact that the German Democratic Republic is a German state. The federal government continues to attach great importance to the improvement of travel opportunities.
