ABSTRACT

Production of fish through a variety of aquaculture techniques could be used to maintain and increase Egypt’s production of fish for domestic consumption and export. In order to understand the factors influencing the historical trends of production, and consequently the possible policies for future development of capture fishery and aqua-culture resources in Egypt, each of these fishery resources should be examined individually. The technology of aquaculture is available for development programs; however, transfer of this knowledge to individual fishermen is difficult. The government must assume sole responsibility for initiating and supervising properly located aquaculture centers which will provide extension services. The US and Egyptian governments signed a contract to start a project for aquaculture development in Egypt, to be centered in Sharkia Governorate. The rate of population growth, the distribution of population between rural and urban areas, population migration, age distribution of population, and cultural changes - all affect the level and the rate of growth of demand for fish.
