ABSTRACT

Professor Arrow wonders why I made the energy cost calculations. I had hoped that I had clearly explained that I seek to determine the feasibility of an energy transformer (does it produce more of a desired energy form than could be made from its processing energy?) and the desirability of the transformer (is this net production greater or less than competing transforming technologies can yield?). I do believe that energy is an important accounting variable on which to uniquely evaluate the feasibility and desirability of energy transformers. It can be shown that if the energy discount rate is higher than the financial discount rate (and it appears to be) nothing can be said about energy feasibility knowing only that a transformer is financially feasible.
