ABSTRACT

The models of development created by Mao Zedong in China and Julius Nyerere in Tanzania have generated a great deal of interest around the world, particularly the Third World. Both models place emphasis on rural development, equality, self sufficiency, and frugality. Both leaders have opted for socialist economies within a one-party state. There are, of course, some important differences between the approaches that the two nations have taken and these differences will be brought out as the development of the two countries is described below. China's birth control policies have shown some notable results in the years since the leadership started encouraging smaller families. Pollutants from industrial plants cause considerable water pollution in China. Although pollution cleanup standards have been on the books since 1974, much remains to be done before these standards are reached by all industrial plants. Tanzania's most important environmental problems are related to the land, particularly to agriculture and forestry.
