ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the potential contributions of Alaska's nonfuel minerals and coal to both state and national goals: at the state level, to broadening Alaska's economy; and at the national level, to decreasing American dependence on imported minerals, particularly those considered strategic to US defense and industry. It examines in metallic minerals and industrial minerals and provides a brief overview of the mineral industry in Alaska. The chapter considers expected market conditions; development of Alaska mineral resources will occur primarily in response to national and world market conditions. It explores several dimensions of the economic consequences of mineral resource development. The chapter also looks at how much Alaska's minerals could reduce America's dependence on a variety of imported minerals, some of which are considered "strategic"—vital to US defense and to American industry. It analyzes whether mineral development has the potential to create alternative state revenue sources, and to foster diversified economic development, particularly in rural Alaska.
