ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews research findings aimed at quantifying the local economic effects. Characteristics of the site area likewise have an influence that is pervasive across virtually all economic impact dimensions. A large-scale project can be expected to affect all aspects of an area's economy, including employment, income, local business activity, property values, and prices of goods and services. The direct employment effects of a new energy facility or other large development project typically occur in two phases: the construction of the facility and its subsequent operation. In addition to the employment created directly in facility construction and in plant or mine operation, energy development can be expected to stimulate increased economic activity and employment in various trade and service sectors of the local economy. Energy development and its attendant population growth generally is expected to result in increased revenues for the local trade and service sector.
