ABSTRACT

This chapter provides suggestions about what local organizations might do to assist the community as a whole in coping with rapid growth. Economic and demographic impacts of growth are relatively easy to measure. The growth management position is clearly within the largely unquestioned ideological framework of modern corporate capitalism. A large number of studies are available which provide information on a variety of local organizations. The schools are where the old and new populations come into the earliest and most intense contact. In a number of communities, educators report conflicts in values, commitment, and lifestyle between the local students and the newcomers. Expectations of local residents about the economic impacts that will accompany energy development seem to ignore the negative aspects of the boom. Local officials often find they are receiving less respect while devoting more time to their duties and being blamed for many of the negative impacts that occur in boomtowns.
