ABSTRACT

Glacier National Park has had no wilderness designated by legislation, principally because wilderness advocates have directed their attention to areas with less protection than national parks. Wilderness is good for wildlife. The grizzly bear will not survive if confined to the one-plus million acres of Glacier National Park. It needs the other four-plus million acres in the Northern Continental Divide grizzly bear ecosystem. That is why wilderness advocates are working with the US Forest Service and others to provide corridors for grizzly bears through nonwilderness areas. There are those who would like to see reintroduction of wolves and caribou into Glacier National Park, Man-induced prescribed fire is gaining acceptance to play "catch-up" to restore natural conditions. Under consideration is a plan to explore the feasibility of translocating grizzly bears from the Glacier area to the Cabinets on the Montana/Idaho border for population enhancement.
