ABSTRACT

This chapter provides guidelines, or direction, for wilderness management in a way that would prove acceptable and workable rather than simply to conduct a workshop as a beginning and end in itself. On a crisp November day, barely one month after the workshop, representatives of the four wilderness managing agencies met at the University to implement the steering committee idea. They were: Joyce Kelly, Director of Recreation, Wilderness, and Cultural Resources, Bureau of Land Management; James Dolan, wilderness specialist of the Forest Service regional office in Missoula; William J. Briggle, superintendent of Mount Rainier National Park; and Marvin Plenert, director of refuges of the Denver Regional Office, Fish and Wildlife Service. Committee members, particularly the non-agency members, were dedicated to the idea that the workshop participants and the public at large should continue to be involved in the process.
