ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the issues involved in analyzing the effect of air quality on visitor enjoyment and presents a methodology for assessing and valuing the visitor's visual experience. Quantification of visitor perceptions first requires a determination of the amount of pollution that causes just noticeable difference in scenic quality. An important component of the quantificaiton of visual air quality perception is the establishment of the relationship between perceived visual air quality and air pollution at an aggregate level. The chapter examines a method for assessing the public enjoyment of a park through the use of the ordered logit probability choice technique. Any management plan should reflect the demand for a visual resource in conjunction with other park attributes. The federal land manager must concentrate on preserving the total experience of visitors to a natural area. A behavior model is one which represents the decisions that a visitor will make when confronted with a number of alternative park attributes.
