ABSTRACT

Recreation activities of one sort or another frequently draw visitors to parks, forests, and recreation areas. While they are there they spend considerable time just looking around at the scenery, even if they are involved in other activities. Recreational activities are frequently individual or family activities. Many are educational in that skills are taught or learned. Often people request information which provides confidence building or approval for their activity in this setting. Some people are very eager to join in educational programs or conducted activities designed to orient visitors. Visitors notice changes in visibility when it deteriorates to very poor levels. Similar responses from visitors have been heard in Shenandoah where there is a natural haze over the Blue Ridge. Experience indicates that visitors don't want anything to come between them and the setting.
