ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors consider general value orientations, life aspirations, and attitudes toward labor related to the emergence of the ideal socialist personality type. They deal with political attitudes and opinions which are connected to youthful citizen involvement with the socialist polity. The authors explore the extent to which students' views represent the success or failure of ideological policy, while also noting policy developments affecting students as a group. The ultimate goal of ideological and educational policy is to create support for and commitment to the political system and its institutions. In a more specific historical and political sense, ideological policy makers have been sensitive to the capacity for political disruptions displayed by students. The authors examine the constellation of student attitudes that suggests students are oriented primarily toward the economic outputs of contemporary Polish society and judge that system in terms of the opportunity structure.
