ABSTRACT

The United States liquid metal fast breeder reactor (LMFBR) program objective has been "to develop a broad technological and engineering base with extensive utility and industrial involvement which will lead to a strong, competitive, commercial breeder industry". Because the LMFBR was selected as the top priority advanced reactor concept for development in the United States and because of the substantial funding dedicated to this program, the General Accounting Office (GAO) decided in the early 1970s to monitor Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) management of the program. The GAO study was reviewed by AEC officials responsible for the project who expressed agreement with the points raised and undertook actions to resolve the problems. The GAO felt that a study of what it will take to achieve commercialization was an important part of the information needed by Congress to determine the future of the LMFBR.
