ABSTRACT

In the sphere of regional development and policy there is always a problem with the selection of good indicators, i.e. those that are reliable, often updated, representative, and available in suitable territorial detail. In the Czech Republic regional policy is very weak and is limited mostly to support for small and medium-size entrepreneurs in assisted regions under the program REGION. Breakdown of the communist regime in 1989 revealed many hidden or suppressed tensions in Czechoslovak society. The equalization of the living standard and of economic level both among and within the socialist countries has been one of the most important political goals of the communists. In spite of the strong interregional equalization, the former Czechoslovakia is a typical example of a country where “central planning had a sectorial character. The Czech Republic is one of the few countries of the former Soviet block with a right wing coalition government pursuing relatively rapid transformation of society and economy.
