ABSTRACT

Functional marginality in structural sense becomes a multidimensional concept that is very much wider than mere regional or locational marginality. Various forms of economic subsidy will undoubtedly be of significance in the future as well, but the aspirations, visions and strategies will have to be created within the companies themselves. The development of functional networking also supports and emphasizes in practice the policy of regional equality employed as an initial target for regional development in many Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development countries. Support measures that set out from network connections and knowhow are nevertheless different from those to be found in the regional policy of the industrial society. The development of collaborative and interactive networks, the dynamics of networking, takes place through a process of exchange and adaptation. The international pioneers of collaborative and interactive networks are regarded as being the more modern branches of industry and the service sector, such as electronics, telecommunications and business services.
