ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to understand the economic, employment and societal effects of tourism in Northern Norway, based on a comprehensive study of four selected area. The direct spin-off effects are mainly related to retail trade in the three northernmost areas, while in Grong the petrol/garage business give the largest employment effects. The data shows that the main income source to direct effects is the group hotels and motels in all areas except Grong. The extent of the effects depends on area characteristics and qualities connected to invested efforts. The share of tourists measured in foreigners and guest nights in the tourism season, stresses the differences between the areas. The direct industry effects are connected to the primary tourism enterprise. In the expenditure method the expenses the tourists have for lodging, food, and petrol are normally measured by interviewing a sample of the tourists.
