ABSTRACT

Dental audit at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Health Center began as a chart audit. Dental records were reviewed by the chief of dentistry at weekly Health Care Evaluation Committee meetings, along with the medical records of families chosen at random. The phase of evaluation has proved useful. Having an organized plan and record results in complete dental treatment. The radiographs are checked against the charting for accuracy in recording of carious and missing teeth which require restoration. Chart audit was performed solely by the chief of dentistry. A further step has been taken by having dentists review each other's charts. A complete and thorough dental record is necessary for quality care; it is of limited use as an evaluation tool. Several patients of each dentist who have completed dental treatment within the last six months are chosen at random every six months. A clinical exam and chart evaluation are performed.
